Okay, the actually printing of the Sun will be shifted to the Free Press plant in Winnipeg.
But what are the "certain other activities" that will be shifted to Winnipeg? What is Pow talking about? Accounting? Reporting? Editorial? Some or all of the advertising sales? Doesn't that mean even more layoffs are on the horizon?
At what point will the Sun be so hollowed out that it becomes a branch plant (bureau?) for the Free Press?
Interesting, as papers in markets the size of the Brandon Sun's are (generally speaking) one of the few bright spots in the North American newspaper industry right now.
I also would have thought that CKX's closure might result in shifting some local ad dollars to alternate media, although radio might have benefited the most from that.
As for the the actual printing and backroom operations of the paper, it could make sense to centralize them in Winnipeg to achieve some economies of scale. However, editorial and ad sales have to stay local if they're going to have a fighting chance.
I'm curious though. How would a Brandon version of the Winnipeg Free Press fly out there? Basically the same paper with a section dedicated to Brandon news, sports, entertainment, opinion and ads.
Sure they could shift some relatively well paying printing jobs to Winnipeg and print the BS there (no pun intended), but the writing would be on the wall. Why would any small business person in Brandon want to support a Winnipeg based and managed enterprise with their ads?

Very soon the WFP will have a "Brandon" supplement, and that will be all she wrote for the Sun.
